Tending the Glorious Garden

Thanks for reading Vera Nadine!
Ooooooo…it’s that time of year again. I haven’t had a garden in several years now….too much moving around in college. But now I have a nice little place to live with a relatively good amount of planting space.
Planning a garden gets me all weak in the knees. All of the luscious catalogs arrive, I find myself typing Latin names into the Google search and drafting scale drawings on spare paper.
Of course reality can sometimes set in…all the work it will be to prepare the garden for new arrivals, being tied-down by required watering times, how much these plants can go over-budget ($ ouch!)
But I never let the “what-ifs” hit me for long, it is just too exciting to be dampened by worry. The power of positive thinking is something that a person just doesn’t even have to actually think about. In the spring all things are possible!
I love anticipating the garden in full-swing. I plant from an emotional place and when everything is blooming….well let’s just say that the flowers in my garden each remind me of different journeys I have taken. There are the bluebells from my recurring dream, the peonies form my past life visions, sunflowers from my favorite meditation and the hollyhocks like my High Priestess had in her garden….
These flowers always bring a completely joyful and innocent smile to my face.
Then there is the herb garden, all of those tasty and healing goodies that I can pack into my small plot. I do a lot of French and Italian cooking so I love thyme, basil, rosemary….those old savory favorites. But I am also a big believer in self-healing (Doctors can be kinda quacky about this but oh well.) So I will be including so aromatherapy stuff like lavender -I always kill this plant- and artemesia. Sage serves double duty as a cooking herb and an aroma-therapeutic one. Medicinals will include lungwort, boneset, yarrow and comfrey to name a few.
My roommate will be directing the vegetable garden (hey one woman can only be in charge of just so many things at once.) I think the planned veggies are romaine lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, onions, zucchini, peas, beans, spinach, then strawberries, honeydew and pumpkins.
Gardening is both really hard work and quite spiritually satisfying, like tending your spirit and embracing your physical existence all at one time.
So I’m off to buy plants with my roommate, we are both pretty pleased with our plans and even if not everything takes, we will still have a grand time this summer. Our biggest problem will probably be the shadiness of the garden plots but I am hopeful that the plants will find a way to thrive. ;)
Wish me luck and happy planting to you all!

Good luck and happy planting!
I had my first ever garden this year and LOVED it. Had home-grown lettuces for five months, and the corriander (cilantro) was amazing too…
Such an essential part of life, taking the time to pour love into the food that you will eat… creating an endless cycle of love and nurturing.
